KINGSVILLE -- Bret Bochsler's three-run home run highlighted an eight-run inning in the first game Saturday and solid Wildcat pitching was the story of the second game as the Wildcats swept a Lone Star Conferece baseball doubleheader from Texas A&M-Kingsville at Nolan Ryan Field.
The Wildcats took the first game Saturday 14-1 behind a 16-hit attack and then won the nightcap, 6-3, behind the pitching duo of Aaron Lambrix and Brad Rutherford.
The two wins push the Wildcats to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the LSC as they stretched their winning streak to four games and secured their third series win in as many series in the early part of the season. The Javelinas, meanwhile, are now 6-5 and 2-5. The series will conclude Sunday with a single game at noon.
In Saturday's doubleheader opener, the Wildcats broke on top with an unearned run when Bochsler drove in Clint Bowker with a double to make it 1-0.
The Wildcats then essentially put the game away with an eight-run, seven-hit third inning.
Cameron Bankston led off the frame with a single, and then with one out Chris Hall singled. Will Calhoun followed with an RBI single before Travis Latz reached ona fielder's choice that erased Calhoun for the second out of the inning.
But as they have done on so many occasions already this season, the Wildcats posted a two-out rally.
Cameron Watten drove in a run with an RBI single before Bowker doubled in a run. Bochsler then came to the plate and homered to drive in three. Ian Williams and Bankston then walked before Willie Uechi doubled in both runs to cap the inning.
The Wildcats added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh and two runs in the fifth. Calhoun finished 4 for 5, while Bochsler finished 3 for 4 with four RBI.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats were able to take advantage of five Kingsville errors to pick up a 6-3 victory.
ACU broke on top with three runs in the second inning, two of them coming in after an error. Watten scored on a wild pitch before Ian Tomkins drove in a run with a single and Uechi plated a run with a sacrifice fly.
ACU added a run in the fourth and two in the sixth to make it a 6-1 game. Kingsville, however, cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth before Lambrix gave way to Rutherford, ACU's all-America closer.
Rutherford -- who struck out five of the six batters he faced in Friday's game -- struck out three of the four batters he faced Saturday afternoon to pick up his second save of the season. Lambrix worked 5 1/3 solid innings, scattering eight hits and striking out eight Javelinas to pick up the win and improve to 1-0.
