Biography

Despite missing spring practice after off-season shoulder surgery, Stewart enters the season as the Wildcats’ likely starter after his play as the backup last season.

2008 (Redshirt freshman):  Stewart was the Wildcats’ backup quarterback and holder on PATs and he played in all 12 games during the season.  He got into eight games in the quarterback role, finishing the season 59 for 87 with one interception for 666 yards and five touchdowns.  His biggest moments came late in the season when he started critical games against Tarleton State and on the road against Texas A&M-Kingsville after starter Billy Malone went down after suffering a broken finger on his throwing hand in the Wildcats’ 52-35 win over West Texas A&M on Oct. 18.  Stewart, though, responded in a huge way, directing ACU to a pair of wins to keep its perfect season alive.  He was 21 for 27 with one interception, 197 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-17 Homecoming win over Tarleton State on Oct. 25.  The next week – with Kingsville’s defense primed to stop Bernard Scott – Stewart beat the Javelinas, throwing for 350 yards and three touchdowns while completing 24 of 34 passes to lead ACU to a 42-17 win that clinched at least a share of the Lone Star Conference title.  He was named the LSC South Division Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Javelinas.  Stewart spent the 2007 season as a redshirt.

High school:  Stewart posted the greatest passing season in the long history of District 3-5A as a senior in 2006 when he broke the district’s regular-season passing record with 3,136 yards to go along with 21 touchdowns.  He broke the district’s single-game passing record in back-to-back weeks with 453 yards against Lubbock Coronado (Sept. 29) and 475 yards against Brownwood (Oct. 6), earning Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Player of the Week honors after each game.  Stewart capped  his high school career by completing 17 of 27 passes for 335 yards and three touchdowns to earn Gordon Wood Offensive MVP honors to lead the South to a 35-7 win over the North in the eighth annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes Myrle Greathouse Classic at Shotwell Stadium.  As a senior Stewart was the District 3-5A Offensive MVP and the Offensive MVP of both the Abilene Reporter-News’ Class 4A-5A team and all-Big Country Super Team.  He was also an honorable mention Class 5A all-state selection by the Associated Press.  Stewart also lettered in baseball, earning first team all-District 3-5A honors as a third baseman in 2007.

Personal:  His cousin is Amarillo High School boys basketball coach Jason Pillion, a former all-state basketball player at Cooper and all-Lone Star Conference basketball player at West Texas A&M.  Born 05 May 1989.  2007 graduate of Cooper High School.
