Sundgren Hits First Career Homer as Wildcats Drop Rubber Match to Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A late RBI single sank Abilene Christian baseball in a 5-4 loss to Indiana at Bart Kaufman Field on Sunday afternoon. After the Wildcats knotted the score at 4 following a three-run seventh-inning, the Hoosiers plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to clinch the series.
ACU continues its run versus power conference opponents when it hosts Texas Tech at Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark. at 5 p.m. Wednesday. It's Pack the Crutch Night, presented by First Financial. The Wildcats return to Western Athletic Conference action when they welcome UT Arlington to Abilene on April 24-26.
Nick Arias and Kanon Sundgren each drove in a pair of runs to make up ACU's scoring. Sundgren belted the first home run of his career in the seventh inning, while Arias hit an RBI double in the first before drawing a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.
Arias, Zandt Payne, Gavin Brzozowski and Ryan Jones tallied two hits apiece, and Diego Cardenas went 1 for 2 with three walks. Payne led off the game with a double, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 33 games. He recorded multiple hits for the 17th game this season, while Arias did so for the 10th time.
Evan Whiteaker was solid in his first start of the season, allowing just one earned run in three innings.
The Wildcats struck first in the opening frame following Payne's leadoff two-bagger. Cardenas walked before Arias laced a ground-rule double to center field, plating Payne. Indiana answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the second, but ACU prevented further damage as Brady Ladusau, Payne and Sundgren connected to throw out a runner at home.
The Hoosiers moved in front, 4-1, with two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth. The Wildcats responded in the seventh, and Brzozowski got the inning started with a walk before Sundgren's long ball to the deepest part of the park in center field.
ACU kept its foot on the gas, with Jones doubling as Payne and Cardenas singled to load the bases. Arias drew a walk to bring Jones home and level the score at 4.
