BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Abilene Christian baseball picked up its 14th victory over a power conference opponent under head coach Rick McCarty with an 8-4 win over Indiana at Bart Kaufman Field on Saturday afternoon. Brady Ladusau blasted two home runs to establish the Wildcats' Division I true freshman home run record.
ACU looks to secure the series victory versus the Hoosiers in the rubber match at 11 a.m. (CT) Sunday. The Wildcats' starting pitcher is to be determined.
ACU beat its second power conference foe of the season following a 4-1 win over TCU on April 7 in Abilene. The Wildcats have earned 17 power conference wins since transitioning to the Division I level in 2014.
Ladusau shined in the batter's box, going 2-for-2 while reaching base and scoring in each of his five plate appearances. He doubled his season home run output to four with a pair of long balls in the fifth and seventh innings. It's the most home runs by a Wildcat in their first collegiate season in ACU's Division I era.
Ladusau's five runs scored are the most by an ACU ballplayer since 2021. He's slashing .309/.421/.491 this year with 20 runs batted in. It's Ladusau's eighth multi-hit game and sixth contest with multiple RBIs.
Each of ACU's seven hits came from the final five batters in the lineup. Kanon Sundgren drove in a career-high three runs behind a pair of singles. Ladusau, Nick Arias and Ryan Jones each walked twice, with Jones drawing a bases-loaded walk to add an insurance run in the ninth.
Cade McGarrh, making his first relief appearance since 2024, earned his third win of the season with 4.1 frames out of the bullpen. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out six. Brady Coe secured his fourth save by retiring the final two batters in the ninth.
Sundgren knotted the score at 1 in the top of the second with an RBI single that plated Ladusau. Indiana added another run in the third, but five runs between the fourth and fifth innings gave ACU a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Sundgren pushed the Wildcats in front, 3-2, with a two-run single in the fourth to score Arias and Ladusau. He has eight hits in his last five games and 10 hits in his last seven contests. A wild pitch then allowed JT Thompson to cross home plate, making it a 4-2 ballgame.
ACU bolstered its advantage in the fifth. After a leadoff walk to Arias, Ladusau took advantage with a two-run shot off the scoreboard in left field, upping the score to 6-2. He continued his power surge in the seventh with a solo blast into the home bullpen.
Two walks and a hit batter filled the bases with Wildcats in the top of the ninth as Jones accepted a base on balls of his own, bringing in Ladusau for his fifth run of the day.
