Lanman Throws Career-High 11 Strikeouts in Tight Loss

ABILENE -- Abilene Christian ace Brett Lanman fired a new career-high 11 strikeouts, but the Loyola Marymount Lions outlasted the Wildcats in a 3-0 pitchers' duel to start a three-game series Friday night at Bullock Brothers Ballpark at Crutcher Scott Field.
Lanman, a junior from Fairview, Texas, did not allow a baserunner until the fifth inning when LMU batters reached on back-to-back singles. The southpaw walked to load the bases, but then struck out Travis Friend to end the frame.
The sixth was not as favorable, though, as the Lions scored when Jaxson Wall doubles, stole third base, and then came home on an infield groundout. LMU added a solo home run in the seventh.
Lanman allowed four hits and two runs in 7.0 innings while fanning 11 in front of a handful of professional scouts. The performance surpassed his previous best of ten punchouts during a win over UT Arlington on March 17, 2024.
LMU pitcher Jonah Johnson was also strong on the mound, hurling an identical 11 strikeouts and only surrendering two hits in 7.0 innings.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth, designated hitter Diego Cardenas doubled to right and Ryan Jones walked. Abilene-native J.T. Thompson singled through the left side to load the bases and put the winning run at the plate with one out. However, the next two batters struck out and flied out to right to finish the game.
