SAN ANTONIO - Abilene Christian baseball takes on its fifth consecutive program from the state of Texas when it meets Incarnate Word at Sullivan Field at 2 p.m. Wednesday. In the past two weeks, the Wildcats have played fellow Lone Star programs Texas State, TCU, Stephen F. Austin and Rice.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+. Freshman left-handed pitcher Baron Mannis is slated to make his first career start after making his first five appearances out of the bullpen.
Mannis has shined in his introduction to college baseball, allowing just one earned run through 14.0 innings pitched. It's good for an 0.64 ERA while striking out 17 batters and leading ACU with a .152 opposing batting average. Mannis hasn't surrendered an earned run his last three outings and 10.0 innings pitched.
The Wildcats are an even 14-14 versus the Cardinals in the Division I era, including a 7-4 mark under head coach Rick McCarty. ACU is aiming for its first victory in San Antonio since 2016, having lost its last five games in the Alamo City.
ACU salvaged its series with Rice this past Sunday with a 4-1 victory at Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark. The Wildcats gave up just five hits and collected 12 strikeouts. Cade McGarrh earned credit for his second win of the season, while Carson Wallace picked up his first career save.
Over the course of the weekend, Diego Cardenas, Ryan Jones and Zandt Payne tallied four hits apiece, with Cardenas and Jones combining for nine runs batted in. Payne scored a team-high four runs. Three of Cardenas' hits were for extra bases, including a two-run homer to give ACU the lead on Sunday.
The Wildcats are tied for 20th in the nation with 26 home runs this season, with Cardenas and Grant Watkins leading the Western Athletic Conference with seven apiece.
