ABILENE, Texas — Abilene Christian women's soccer is proud to announce that Bella Medrano has been named WAC Goalkeeper of the Week and Katy Gregson has been selected WAC Defensive Player of the Week for their outstanding performances.
Freshman goalkeeper Bella Medrano was recognized for her stellar performance in ACU's recent match against Baylor, where she made nine saves in just over 80 minutes of action. Despite tough pressure and frequent shots, Medrano helped keep the Wildcats competitive throughout, holding off the Bears' attack in the second half.
"Bella had a shutout with limited shots but had to make two key saves at the end of the NWST game, and was stellar against Baylor on the road," head coach Stephen Salas said. "Outside of a penalty kick and a quick counter, she made nine saves and was heroic off her line. As a freshman, she's got a bright future ahead of her, and we have a talented goalkeeping lineup she is a part of."
Junior defender Katy Gregson also earned recognition for her defensive leadership and consistency. In the match versus Northwestern State, Gregson contributed both defensively and offensively, recording a shot on goal and helping maintain a strong backline showing.
"Katy has come in as a transfer and hit the ground running with our team with her leadership, energy, and poise," said Salas. "It looks like she's been playing with the team for a long time. She is relentless in her defense and composed on both sides of the ball. A great time to pick up two awards going into conference play and looking to continue to stack our positive performances."
ACU takes its bye week before conference, and will be back in action on September 25 against California Baptist.
