The Wildcats broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the second inning. Benjamin Greer gave ACU a 1-0 lead with an RBI single and Zandt Payne and Gino D'Alessio tacked on two-run singles.
Aaron Staehely tripled in a run in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Greer to make it 7-0 in the third inning.
SSU scored twice in the sixth but ACU answered with a two-run single by Jack Nielsen in the eighth for the final margin.
The Wildcats had 13 hits, led by Payne, Miller Ladusau, Maddox Miesse and Greer. Payne and Ladusau had doubles. ACU also had singles by DJ Van Atten and Garrett Williams.
Iain Campa pitched five scoreless innings with four strikeouts to collect his fourth win of the season.
The Wildcats and Hornets play for the series win at 1 p.m. Central on Sunday.
