ABILENE – Abilene Christian men's tennis suffered a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Rice Friday at the Eager Tennis Center.
The Wildcats' points were earned by senior Hunter Holman at No. 6, and the Sheehy brothers at No. 1 and 2 singles. Holman wrecked Ashton Duke, 6-0, 6-1 for his seventh win of the spring, and Josh Sheehy tied the score at 2-2 after defeating Eric Rutledge by retirement, 6-2, 3-3.
Rutledge jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Sheehy in the second set but signaled to his coaches and officials he could no longer continue following the sixth point.
Jonathan Sheehy, meanwhile, held off Sumit Sarkar, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, tying his older brother for the team lead in singles victories with 10. His victory at No. 2 tied the team score at 3-3, but the Wildcats were unable to complete their comeback bid as Jacob Eskeland beat ACU's Niko Moceanu in three sets at No. 3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
