Men’s tennis edged 4-3 at nationally ranked Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas – Abilene Christian men's tennis lost its first Southland Conference match of the season Sunday, dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 71 Lamar at Thompson Family Center.
The loss dropped ACU's overall and league records to 17-7 and 2-1, while the Cardinals – winners of four straight – remained perched atop the conference standings at 12-5 and 3-0.
During a regular-season in which there's only five conference duals to be played, the Wildcats will have to win their next two and hope Lamar falls later this month to either Incarnate Word of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in order to remain in the hunt for the conference crown.
"It was a great effort today by our guys, but we just fell short against one the best Lamar teams I've ever coached against," said ACU head coach Hutton Jones. "We came very close to cracking it … so it hurts a bit, but still we give all the credit where it's due to Lamar."
The Wildcats entered today on a four-match winning streak, but again were without the services of one their best players in sophomore Paul Domanski due to illness. Domanski is 8-2 over his last 10 matches and ranks third on the team with 12 victories, the last of which took place Thursday in the Wildcats' 5-2 win at UTSA. He did not compete in singles Saturday during ACU's 5-2 win at Incarnate Word, but did win his third straight Southland match at No. 2 alongside Jason Proctor.
With Domanski unavailable, the Wildcats moved freshmen Josh Sheehy and Sebastian Langdon up to No. 2 and paired Proctor with senior Marco Bensley for the first time this spring. Sheehy and Langdon lost for the first time together after four-straight wins, 6-2, to Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Nikita Lis, while Proctor's and Bensley's match was left unfinished with the Wildcats trailing 4-2 to Juuso Laitinen and Sebastian Santibanez.
ACU's No. 1's of sophomore Henry Adams and Nico Agritelley also lost 6-1 to Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer.
Adams would soon fall again at No. 5 to Hoogenboezem, putting the Wildcats in an 0-2 hole. And after ACU cut its deficit in half following Agritelley's No. 3 win over Santibanez, 6-4, 6-3, the Cardinals scored back-to-back victories at No. 1 and 6 to clinch the match.
Feucht defeated Sheehy at the top-line in a seesaw battle, 7-5, 7-6 (7), and Juuso Laitinen rallied to beat Langdon at No. 6, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Afterward Proctor and Holman completed a pair of three-set comebacks. Proctor topped Lis at No. 2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Holman won his fifth-straight, beating Schweizer, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, to take over the team lead in victories with 16.
Proctor and Holman are the only Wildcats who are undefeated in Southland Conference singles competition at 3-0.
The Wildcats conclude their lengthy road trip Monday with a match vs. the defending Southland Conference Champions from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
