Men's Tennis begins Spring Break with split at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Abilene Christian rebounded from a late-morning loss Sunday at Southern Miss with a convincing 6-1 victory over Jackson State on the USM Tennis Courts to begin its four-match Spring Break road trip into Mississippi and Louisiana.
The doubleheader split puts the Wildcats' season record at 14-6. Southern Miss of Conference USA improved to 10-7, while the Tigers of the SWAC fell to 3-9.
In their afternoon win over Jackson State, the Wildcats won at No. 2 and 3 doubles and won each singles match with the exception of No. 1 where freshman Josh Sheehy fell in three sets to Federico Boscarino, 1-6, 7-5, 11-9.
Sheehy also lost at No. 1 doubles along side junior Nico Agritelley, 6-4, to Boscarino and partner Camilo Patino.
The remaining doubles scores favored ACU. Senior Marco Bensley and sophomore Paul Domanski doubled up the No. 3 tandem of Ryan Swanier and Styliouos Guantsaris, 6-3, and at No. 2, sophomore Henry Adams and senior Jason Proctor trounced Federico Mendieta Rulz and Richie Agarwal, 6-1.
Agritelley, Proctor, Adams and sophomore Hunter Holman all then won in straight sets in singles from the No. 2 to 5 positions, and at No. 6, Domanski rallied from a set down to top Agarwal, 0-6, 7-6, 10-8.
ACU started its day by suffering its third shutout of the year and first against an unranked opponent, falling 4-0 in an abbreviated dual at Southern Miss. The Wildcats lost two doubles matches by matching 6-4 scores at the No. 1 and 2 positions, and dropped three singles decisions in straight sets.
Sheehy, the defending Southland Conference Player of the Week, lost for only the second time all spring in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to Taurn Surat at No. 1. Chao-Yu snapped Agritelley's three-match winning streak at No. 3, 6-4, 6-1, and at No. 4, Jorman Reyes (USM) defeated Holman, 7-5, 6-1.
Three additional singles matches were left unfinished with the Wildcats leading at No. 5 and 6, and trailing at No. 2. Freshman Sebastian Langdon came up a point short of beating Rakshit Rishi at No. 6, 6-3, 5-2, and at No. 5, Adams was leading Daniel Merker, 7-5, 4-1.
Senior Jason Proctor lost his first set at No. 2, 7-6, but was tied with Wen-Po Tesng in the second set, 1-1.
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday with a men's and women's doubleheader vs. Nicholls in Houma, La. Th men's match time is still to be determined, but the women's dual is listed for a noontime start.
