ABILENE - Abilene Christian men's tennis swept the singles after losing the doubles point and defeated the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos, 6-1, on a picture-perfect Friday afternoon at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
The loss dropped UMKC of the WAC Conference to 3-2, while the Wildcats, who lost to the 'Roos last season in Kansas City, 4-3, improved to 10-4.
The sweep of singles lifted ACU's spring record to 51-30 (.630). Freshman Josh Sheehy, who earned the clinching point at No. 1, 7-6 (4), 6-4 over Airam Castellano, is now 11-2, and sophomores Paul Domanski and Hunter Holman each won their eighth match of the season.
Holman was first off the courts today, beating Mike Psarros, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4, which tied the team score at 1-1. Junior Nico Agritelley followed with an equally convincing, 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Andrey Smirnov to give ACU the lead for good.
Senior Jason Proctor, playing at No. 2, topped Uldis Gaismins, 7-5, 6-3, for his seventh win of the spring, and then at No. 1 Sheehy held on to beat Castellano for the match-winner.
Afterward the team turned its attention to the south courts where senior Marco Bensley, competing in only his second singles match of the season, outlasted Vinh Pham at No. 6, 6-3, 7-6, and Domanski completed the sweep, rallying from a set down to beat Amaury Navette, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The Wildcats are off from competition until Sunday, Feb. 28 when they'll play a doubleheader against Baylor and Eastern Washington. The Baylor dual begins at 1 p.m., and then ACU will travel to SMU's courts for a neutral-site dual vs. the Eagles.
The next Wildcat home matches are on Friday, March 4 when ACU plays host to Temple (12 p.m.) and McMurry (4 p.m.).
