COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Abilene Christian men's tennis battled back from a pair of one-point deficits Saturday to defeat 53rd-ranked UC Davis 4-3 to run its winning streak to seven and finish its stay at the Air Force Academy at 4-0.
Head coach
Hutton Jones, who has been associated with ACU tennis for over 25 years as a player and coach, said the Aggies were the highest-ranked NCAA DI opponent ever defeated by the Wildcats.
Sophomore
Paul Domanski was credited with the match-clinching point following his three-set comeback win at No. 6, but wouldn't have placed in that enviable position if not for the wins posted at the top-three positions by freshman
Josh Sheehy, junior
Nico Agritelley and senior
Jason Proctor.
After the Wildcats lost the doubles point, Sheehy and Agritelley quickly defeated their opposition at No. 1 and 3 singles in straight sets. Sheehy upset 38th-ranked singles competitor Alec Adamson, 7-5, 6-1, and Agritelley knocked off Brett Bacharach, 6-3, 6-2.
Then it was the Aggies' turn to retake the lead as wins at No. 4 and 5 placed them one point away from halting the Wildcats' longest win streak since 2011. But Proctor came back from a set down to beat James Wade, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, to tie the score at 3-3, and then with all eyes on his court, Domanski did the same in topping Eli Whittle, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.
Domanski has won his last three singles' decisions in improving to 5-3 this spring, but Sheehy still owns the Wildcats' longest individual winning streak at eight matches – and all at the No. 1 position.
"This was an unbelievably tough win," said Jones. "We go down 3-2 but Proctor makes a dramatic comeback to win 7-6, keeping us alive and tying the match at 3-3. Meanwhile, Domanski just lost his first set, but wins the second, 7-5, and the third, 6-4, for the highest-ranked win ever in ACU history. Davis is a great team … they just beat No. 33 Pepperdine last week."
ACU's win over the Aggies came just a few hours after blanking Northern Colorado, 7-0, for their third shutout of the spring but none of the individual victories came easy. Sheehy, Agritelley, Domanski and senior
Marco Bensley all were forced to win in three sets, and
Cole Lawson had to hold on to beat Alex Clerihew at No. 5, 7-6, 6-4.
The Wildcats doubles sweep of the Bears by scores of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4 was their third of the season.
The Wildcats return to action Friday, Feb. 5 for their home-opening matches vs. Tyler and Trinity at 3 and 7:30 p.m. ACU will then go to Lubbock next Saturday for duals vs. Texas Tech and Southwest.
