Men’s Tennis pushes win streak to five vs. Metro State and Air Force
1/30/2016 12:13:00 AM | Men's Tennis
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Abilene Christian men's tennis started its trip to the Rocky Mountains with a doubleheader sweep of Metro State and Air Force on the indoor courts of the USAFA.
The Wildcats defeated the Roadrunners, 6-1, and the Falcons, 5-2; however, nothing came easy for the ACU lineup against the host school as three of the singles matches were pushed to a third set and two of the doubles contests were decided by one point.
Freshman Josh Sheehy and sophomore Nico Agritelley clinched the doubles point for ACU over the Falcons with their 7-6 decision at the No. 1 position, and at the top line in singles, Sheehy improved to 6-1 with his three-set victory over Andrew Parks, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
Sheehy's win broke a 2-2 tie, and some time afterward the Wildcats finally clinched the match behind a 6-3, 7-5 win for sophomore Henry Adams over Isaac Perez. Freshman Sebastian Langdon then held off Tadhg Collins at No. 6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
Adams' singles win streak is now at three matches, while sophomore Hunter Holman has won his last five matches between the No. 4 and 5 positions. It was his win tonight at No. 4 over Max Olson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, that tied the score at 2-2 after the Wildcats lost their first two singles matches at No. 2 and 3.
"This was a big win for us," said head coach Hutton Jones. "We overcame several pressure situations, and this is the third time during this young season we've clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 tiebreak victory ... A good stepping stone for the Wildcats."
Against the Roadrunners of Metro State, the Wildcats swept doubles by scores of 6-2, 6-3, and 6-4 and won five of six singles. Adams won his match at No. 5, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3, while Sheehy, senior Jason Proctor, Holman and Langdon all won in straight sets at No. 1, 3, 4 and 6.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday for a doubleheader vs. Northern Colorado of the Big Sky Conference and UC Davis of the Big West.
