2/13/2015 8:12:00 PM | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
ABILENE - Abilene Christian tennis began its second season of Southland Conference competition with mixed results Friday at the Eager Tennis Pavilion as the women improved to 3-0 with a 4-1 win over New Orleans, while the men were edged by the Privateers, 4-3, to fall to 2-6 on the spring.
On a sun-splashed 70 degree afternoon in front a few hundred fans dining on free Dr. Pepper and hot dogs, the Wildcat women won their third consecutive doubles point thanks to a thrilling 9-8 victory by Brittney Reed and Kaysie Hermsdorf that ended in a 7-3 tiebreaker.
The win kept Reed and Hermsdorf undefeated this spring at 8-0 and improved their standing at No. 1 to 3-0. Additionally, Lucile Pothier and Erin Walker raised their No. 2 mark to 3-0 and Nada Marjanovic and Whitney Williams were 8-4 victors at No. 3.
Marjanovic and Williams never took to the singles court as the match was clinched by a pair of three-set wins by Reed and Hermsdorf at the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively. Reed won her third straight by defeating Anja Luethi, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, while Hermsdorf held back Soledad Arroyo, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, for singles' win No. 5.
Pothier was the first off the court, beating Marta Sans, 6-1, 6-1, and then the Privateers earned their lone point with Anna Segarra topping Walker, 7-6, 6-2.
The men's team was stunned by New Orleans, which won the doubles point in addition to the No. 4 to 6 singles' contests.
Senior Guilherme Gesser and sophomore Nico Agritelley were double winners for the Wildcats. They first won together at No. 1 doubles over Gonzalo Garcia and Timo
Kranz, 8-6, and later captured points at No. 1 and 3 singles.
Gesser defeated Rui Silva, 6-1, 0-6, 6-0, at the top spot for his second victory of the year, and Agritelley improved to a team best 5-3 following his straight-set triumph over Garcia, 6-1, 6-4. Junior Jason Proctor also netted the Wildcats a point after beating Kranz at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't get one more victory out of the back half of its lineup as No. 4 and 5 players Henry Adams and Paul Domanski were beaten in straight sets, and No. 6 Marco Bensley dropped a heartbreaker at No. 6, falling to Giacomo Adoncecchi , 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
The ACU women return to action with a recently added dual at Texas A&M on Saturday, Feb. 21, while the men play a doubleheader next Friday, Feb. 20 at Prairie View A&M and Rice.
