DENTON, Texas - Two goals within a 20-second span midway through the second half lifted the North Texas women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Abilene Christian Friday night at the MG Soccer Complex.
The undefeated Mean Green (4-0) only took a 1-0 lead into the break on the season's first goal from Chelsei Soto despite outshooting the Wildcats by a 17-3 margin, but during the 65th minute, North Texas received a 20-yard blast from Marchelle Davis followed by a redirection from Karla Pineda off a Jackie Moreau free kick.
The Mean Green would go on to outshoot ACU, 15-3, in the second half and 32-6 for the match. They also earned 10 corner kicks.
All three goals were allowed by sophomore Sydney Newton, who made a career high nine saves in 70 minutes of competition. Sophomore Kelsey Dombrowski played the final 20 minutes and made three stops in her season debut.
Newton now has 31 saves through the first five matches of the season. She had 29 all of last year through four starts (12 appearances) and 751 minutes of action.
Offensively, the Wildcats put four of their six shots on frame and broke North Texas's season-opening, three-match shutout streak when Sunday's overtime hero Baylee Mitchell scored just inside the 73rd minute to make it a 3-1 match. Mitchell, a freshman, now leads the Wildcats with two goals this season.
The three goals allowed by ACU (2-3) were its most since Sept. 27, 2013, when the Wildcats lost 3-1 at Nicholls.
ACU returns to action Sunday night at TCU. The Horned Frogs improved to 2-3 Friday with a 2-0 home win over LSU.
