ACU men win National Invitational Tennis Tournament; Women obliterate Omaha
4/26/2014 9:10:00 PM | Men's Tennis
OMAHA, Neb. - Abilene Christian's men's tennis team Saturday finished its 2014 season as champions of the inaugural National Invitational Tennis Tournament as the Wildcats first defeated New Jersey Tech, 6-1, before avenging an early-season loss to Grand Canyon, 4-3.
The two wins not only gave ACU a trophy to take home, but an exceptional overall record of 17-10 (.630) that was earned during its first year of NCAA Division I competition.
"Our men today - and this season - accomplished more than anyone thought they could have," said ACU head coach Hutton Jones, "and it all just feels very satisfying.
"We really want to see this tournament continue," he added, "not only for the transitional schools and independents, but for all the teams that get left out of nationals after their conference tournament - that's why we called it the National Invitational Tennis Tournament ... to make it similar to what basketball has."
The Wildcats' match against the Antelopes came down to the final two singles matches and was ultimately won by freshman Nico Agritelley at No. 4 as he held off Benjamin Collomb in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. Also winning in singles were sophomore Nicklas Wingord at No. 2 over Ahmad Saleem, 6-1, 7-6, and sophomore Marco Bensley over Alexander Roggenkamp at No. 6, 6-4, 6-0.
"We got beat by them earlier in the year in a very close match," said Jones, "with the difference being we earned the doubles point today, which helped us get to the finish line."
In their first meeting back on Jan. 25 in Colorado Springs, ACU's No. 1 and 3 doubles teams lost, but this afternoon they won by respective scores of 8-6 and 8-4. Senior Borja Cortés and junior Guilherme Gesser earned the victory at No. 1 over Collomb and Roggenkamp, while Wingord and Bensley were the victors at No. 3 over Meidy Cahzeau and Jacob Spizman.
Interestingly, when the season began, GCU played Collomb and Roggenkamp at the No. 3 position where they beat Wildcats' Michael Morris and Jason Proctor, 6-4.
Agritelley's and Bensley's contests were both rematches. Agritelley also beat Collomb back in January, 6-5 (4), 6-2, while Bensley had lost to Roggenkamp, 6-4, 6-2.
With two victories today, Agritelley finished his first spring on a 10-match winning streak and registered a final overall dual record of 17-9. Bensley - a second-team all-Southland Conference selection - finished second to Agritelley with 16 wins and Cortés completed his first full year at No. 1 with a mark of 15-11.
In doubles, the Wildcats' recorded a .635 winning percentage (47-27) led by 17 wins from Gesser, followed by 16 from Agritelley, and 14 each from Cortés, Bensley and Proctor.
ACU's first match today against the Highlanders was never in much doubt. The Wildcats won the doubles point behind No. 1 and No. 3 scores of 8-5 and 8-4 and then went on to win the No. 1 -5 singles matches with everyone but Gesser at No. 2 winning in straight sets.
The Wildcats' women's team (18-5) today also recorded an easy victory, pitching its fourth shutout of the season against host Omaha, 7-0. The Mavericks were again blanked by Grand Canyon later in the evening, setting up a second Wildcats vs. Antelopes dual for the invitational championship, which will be played Sunday at 9 a.m.
On the women's courts, ACU swept doubles by scores of 8-5, 8-4 and 8-1 and won each of the six singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Kaysie Hermsdorf blanked Kenzie Hill at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0, while her sister, senior Micah Hermsdorf and freshman Erin Walker came within a point of doing the same to their opposition at No. 1 and 2, respectively.
Micah Hermsdorf has now won five straight matches in lifting her spring record to 18-6, while sophomore Nada Marjanovic won her 20th match of the season after beating Lindsay Weideman at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, Micah and Kaysie Hermsdorf's victory at No. 1 raised their season mark to an impressive 20-5. Walker and Brittney Reed (19-7) are in position to join them in the 20-win club tomorrow when they take on the Antelopes.
