KYLE CONWELL POSTGAME INTERVIEW
BRITT BONNEAU POSTGAME INTERIVEW
ABILENE - Senior Kyle Conwell tied an Abilene Christian (20-12, 8-3 LSC) single-game record with three home runs in leading the Wildcats to a 5-4 victory over Eastern New Mexico (17-12, 5-6 LSC) Friday night at Crutcher Scott Field.
The last and only other Wildcat to accomplish a similar feat was Joel Wells, who did it against Tarleton State in 2006.
Conwell's home runs tonight were his first three of the season and all sailed over the wall in left field. The Renton, Wash., native hit his first two home runs off Brian Kennedy in the fourth and fifth innings to pull the Wildcats within a run at 4-3. And then in his final at-bat leading off the seventh inning, he clubbed a walk-off shot vs. reliever Dylan Montano (0-1) on a 3-2 pitch.
Conwell's dramatic blast was ACU's first walk-off home run since 2008 (Mike Elkerson vs. East Central) and made a winner of junior reliever Brady Rodriguez (2-1), who had just retired the top of the Greyhounds' lineup in order on 12 pitches.
Senior Aaron Lambrix started for the Wildcats and gave up all four of Eastern's runs in the fourth, three of which were earned.
Trouble for the Wildcats began immediately that frame when designated hitter Peter Creamer's leadoff bunt single was followed by a pair of one-out base hits by Josh Cunningham and Daniel Binz.
Cunningham smoked a RBI single to the left-center gap to score Creamer, and then the panic level quickly escalated after Binz' infield single to second was compounded by first baseman Tyler Eager's two-base throwing error. Eager retrieved the ball behind the first-base bag after Seth Spivey missed on a diving attempt, but then rushed his throw over to third base trying to get Cunningham.
Lambrix hit the next batter - Rafael Romo - and Brett Ackerman reached when Eager dropped Spivey's throw from the infield grass. Binz scored on the second of Eager's errors, while Romo came home on Brooke Brooks' sacrifice fly to right field that made it a 4-0 game.
After the fourth, however, Eastern never again threatened as Lambrix retired the final seven batters he faced through the sixth.
ACU's comeback began modestly in its half of the fourth with Conwell's leadoff home run, but the momentum clearly swung back in the Wildcats' favor after Conwell again took Kennedy deep in the fifth.
An RBI single to right field by Eager in the sixth tied the game at 4-4 just before a thunderstorm rolled into the area and delayed the game for 98 minutes.
After the game resumed, Montano got Kyle Giusti to end the inning on a fly ball to center followed by Rodriguez taking care of business in the seventh.
The Wildcats won the first game of their doubleheader today, edging the Greyhounds, 2-1, behind 7.0 strong innings from Carter Hahn (5-2), who finished with four strikeouts.
Hahn pitched with runners in scoring position for most the game, but wiggled out of several jams thanks to some key defensive plays.
In the fifth, the Greyhounds had runners at the corners and one out, but Brooks was called for batter's interference and then Giusti at third stopped Colton Sims' grounder in the hole before making a clean throw to first for the final out.
Hahn finished with 112 pitches and came closest to having a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth. But with two outs that frame he surrendered a solo home run to Jacob Rogers that tied the score at 1-1.
Fortunately for the Wildcats, they were able to break the deadlock with one out in the sixth when pinch runner Mason Smith scored from third base on Ty Taylor's sac fly to center off Montano.
Eastern starter Jaspreet Shergill (2-2) was pitching a fine game up until the sixth when he walked the first two batters, which forced the Greyhound coaches to turn to their bullpen and Montano.
Montano got the first out before issuing an intentional walk to Chuck Duarte and loading the bases for Taylor.
ACU grabbed the game's first lead in the fourth on Duarte's two-out RBI single to left that plated Giusti from second base. Giusti led off the inning with a single, which was one of only three hits allowed by Jaspreet.
The Wildcats and Greyhounds conclude their four-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
