TRAVIS SCHUETZE AND BRITT BONNEAU INTERVIEW WITH GRANT BOONE
ABILENE – Abilene Christian's baseball team can take over first place in the Lone Star Conference standings this week with a strong showing against visiting Eastern New Mexico. The four-game series begins Thursday at 4 p.m.
The two sides will then play a doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m. before concluding their series Saturday with a 1 p.m. game, which will feature some very special guests from Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The 20 'Littles' – as they're referred to by the organization – will be accompanied throughout the game by an ACU student-athlete, and will dine on free hot dogs and snacks before getting to meet the ball players afterward. The Littles also will receive a free t-shirt plus autographs.
The Wildcats (18-11, 6-2 LSC) are off to a solid start vs. the conference as they've won 3 of 4 the last two weeks against No. 24 Incarnate Word and No. 10 Texas A&M-Kingsville. ACU won its first three games against the Javelinas by scores of 12-6, 3-2, and 4-0 before dropping the finale, 4-3, on a walk-off hit in the ninth.
The series win at Kingsville pushed ACU into second place in the LSC, 1.0 game behind leader Tarleton State (18-8-1, 7-12 LSC).
Senior Aaron Lambrix was credited with the complete-game shutout victory in game three as he held the Javelinas to just one hit – a leadoff double to Ben Villafuerte in the fourth inning. He also struck out five and threw just 79 pitches in earning the Wildcats' fourth-consecutive Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week award. Other winners include Carter Hahn (March 5), Brady Rodriguez (March 12) and Ty Taylor (March 18).
Lambrix was one of only five pitchers used last weekend by the Wildcats, who posted a 3.16 ERA and .214 opponents' batting average vs. Kingsville. Hahn and Austin Palmer won their starts on Friday and Saturday, respectively, while Taylor left a 3-3 game Sunday after 8.0 innings. Rodriguez made three appearances out of the bullpen and earned his fifth save of the year in relief of Hahn, but also was tagged with Sunday's loss, which was only his first of the year.
Rodriguez has pitched in relief 18 times through 29 games this year and currently owns a 1.07 ERA to go along with 24 strikeouts.
The ACU offense, meanwhile, clubbed 44 hits and scored 22 runs against what's statistically considered to be the LSC's top pitching staff. The team as a whole hit .341 vs. the Javelinas led by sophomore Tyler Eager, who went 7 for 14 with four runs and two RBI. Kyle Giusti and Kyle Conwell also hit well above .400, while lead off man Seth Spivey belted his second home run of the year as part of a 7 for 18 weekend with six runs scored.
Incredibly, Spivey's round-tripper in game one was ACU's only extra-base hit of the weekend. But who needs a big bases-clearing hit when the opposing team walks 17, makes eight errors and surrenders nine sacrifice hits and five stolen bases?
The Greyhounds (16-10, 4-4 LSC) lost all three of their games in Abilene to the Wildcats, Texans and Cameron Aggies earlier this year during the Whitten Inn Classic, but return this week to the Big Country in the midst of a five-game winning streak.
Eastern began its streak with a 6-4 win over New Mexico Highlands and then swept a four-game series from Cameron last weekend that pushed their home record to 13-1. But away from Portales this season, the Greyhounds are 3-9 and have not won on the road since Feb. 17.
Eastern currently has the most hits (302) and highest team batting average (.367) in the conference, but its pitching staff has the worst ERA at 7.59.
During their three games in Abilene, the Greyhounds' offense hit 80 points lower than their season average and scored about two fewer runs per game even as Colton Sims batted .727 and Rafael Romo hit .636. The pitching, however, was rocked for 39 runs on 47 hits through 23 innings, equaling a 14.09 ERA.
The Wildcats lead their all-time series vs. Greyhounds, 69-30, which includes this year's non-conference win. The two teams split last year's four-game series in Portales.
