ABILENE - Junior Seth Spivey's leadoff home run set the tone for Abilene Christian's largest offensive attack of the season Friday night at Crutcher Scott Field as the Wildcats mauled the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico, 18-3.
Spivey's round-tripper was his and the team's first of the season, and the first of what would turn into a 23-hit night for the Wildcats. Eleven of their hits went for extra bases, including two triples and eight doubles.
Everyone in the ACU (8-7) lineup reached base at least once, but none more than junior third baseman Kyle Giusti, who went 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Two of those hits were doubles.
Senior and No. 7 batter Kyle Conwell also had a big night at the plate with three doubles and three runs scored. In fact, the bottom third of the Wildcats' lineup contributed nine hits and nine runs.
No. 8 hitter and right fielder Keith Yorkman went 3-for-5 with three runs and a RBI, while No. 9 batter and DH Heath Beasley lifted his season average to .750 with a 3-for-4, three-run, three-RBI performance.
In his two starts this week, Beasley is a combined 6-for-8 with a triple, four runs and five RBI.
Further up the lineup, Travis Schuetze - the team's leading hitter at .477 - went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Tyler Eager went 2-for-5.
Catcher Rodge Macy scored two and drove in one from the cleanup position, and shortstop Chuck Duarte drove in the Wildcats' final runs of the night on a shot back up the middle in the sixth vs. reliever Alberto Blanco.
Spivey, meanwhile, reached base twice more following his first-inning home run as part of a 3-for-5, three RBI night.
Ben Monticello (2-2) started for Eastern New Mexico (11-3) and gave up 11 runs on 10 hits in 2.0 innings. Brian Kennedy followed for one frame and was touched up for one run on three hits.
Blanco came aboard in the fourth and surrendered 10 runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
The offensive fireworks made it an easy night for ACU starter Jordon Herrera (4-1), who struck out six in his 7.0 innings of work. Herrera allowed one run in the third on a RBI single by Colton Sims and two more in fourth on Rafael Romo's two-out single.
Tonight marked the sixth time in 15 games that the Wildcats have scored 10 or more runs, and the fourth in which they've won by the 10-run rule that goes into effect after the seventh inning. With 23 hits and 18 runs though 40 at-bats tonight, ACU is currently hitting .303 as a team this season and has outscored its opposition, 110-81 (7.3 runs per game).
The Wildcats finish their weekend series Saturday at 6 p.m. vs. Cameron. The Aggies lost earlier today to Tarleton State, 9-6.
