HOUSTON – The ACU Wildcats will be on the road for the fourth straight week this Saturday when they travel to Houston to take on the Huskies of Houston Baptist, a first-year collegiate football program and future Southland Conference rival beginning in 2014.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast in the Houston area on Comcast Houston. The game will be played at BBVA Compass Stadium, the home of the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer.
This game will be the second time in the last three weeks that the Wildcats have played a football game in a professional soccer stadium after playing Tarleton State at Toyota Stadium (home of FC Dallas) in Frisco on Sept. 21.
The last time the Wildcats played in the Houston area was in September 1996 when they beat Prairie View A&M, 30-14, in Prairie View (47 miles from Houston). Prior to that, the last time the Wildcats played a game near Houston was Dec. 4, 1976, when they beat Harding, 22-12, in the Shrine Bowl. Saturday's game is believed to be the first time the Wildcats have ever played a college football game in Houston.
ACU enters Saturday night's contest riding a three-game losing streak, its longest since a four-game losing streak midway through the 2005 season when former head coach Chris Thomsen was in his first season and current head coach Ken Collums was in his first season as the Wildcats' offensive coordinator. Since the end of that four-game losing streak and the beginning of this three-game skid, ACU's on-field record is a remarkable 62-16.
Despite last week's struggles in the 28-20 loss at Pittsburg State, the Wildcats still carry one of the top offensive units in the country into the game against the Huskies. ACU is still fifth in NCAA Division I football (FBS and FCS) in points scored with 267 and 10th in points per game at 44.5.
Senior quarterback John David Baker is tied for second in FCS football with 19 touchdown passes (against just two INTs), and he's sixth in FCS football with 1,648 passing yards. Junior defensive end Nick Richardson is tied for third in FCS football with seven sacks through six games.
After Saturday's game, ACU will return home next week (Oct. 19) for its final home game of the season when it takes on Incarnate Word for Homecoming.
