JOPLIN, Mo. - Mckinzie Rieber scored two first-half goals in leading Nebraska-Kearney to a 2-0 win over Abilene Christian Friday night on the campus of Missouri Southern. The match was originally scheduled to start at 4 p.m. but was delayed by more than three hours due to thunderstorms.
The Lopers improved to 3-1 with the win, while the Wildcats fell to 1-2.
Rieber scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway in the 37th minute and then punched one in from three yards back with five seconds remaining. Ashtin Pawloski was credited with the assist.
The Wildcats outshot the Lopers 8-1 in the second half and 11-8 for the match, but were again frustrated by the opposing goalkeeper, and tonight it was Marissa Niday who came through with six saves. Julie Coppedge had four shots stopped by Niday, while Krysta Grimm was twice denied, and in the 72nd minute Elizabeth Bontke's shot hit the post.
The Wildcats also earned eight corner kick opportunities over the final 45 minutes, but couldn't hook one past Niday and her defenders.
ACU was held to just three shots in the first half and didn't record their first until the 34th minute.
Wildcat senior goalkeeper Arielle Moncure made three saves.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday at noon vs. Missouri Southern. ACU is 0-2 all-time vs. the Lions.
