
Wildcats To Tangle With Southern Arkansas This Weekend

ABILENE – Winners of five straight games, the Abilene Christian baseball team continues its month-long homestand this weekend with a three-game series against the Muleriders of Southern Arkansas. Game one is set for Friday at 4:05 p.m. followed by a seven/nine-inning doubleheader on Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
The Wildcats (6-2) are coming off a four-game sweep of Colorado Christian, in which they outscored the Cougars, 36-13, and posted a team earned-run average of 2.61. Pitchers Aaron Lambirx, Jordan Herrera, and Clint Cooper all won their starts, combining for 15.0 innings of works and 10 strikeouts while only issuing two walks.
Lambrix – a 10-game winner for ACU in 2010 – displayed quality command in his game two start as he scattered three hits over 6.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts (no walks). Emmett Niland then came on to pitch the final frame to give the Wildcats their first shutout victory of the season.
Niland, a catcher, also did well at the plate by going 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in game three of the series.
Five ACU starters hit better than .300 against Cougar pitching, led by Duncan Blades, who went 5-for-9 with two doubles, four runs, and three RBI. Rodge Macy hit .455 and scored the most ACU runs with six, while Tyler Eager hit .357 on top of delivering the Wildcats' first home run and a walk-off RBI single in game four's 10-9 triumph.
Members of the Great American Conference, Southern Arkansas comes into Crutcher Scott Field with a 4-2 record after going 3-1 last weekend at a round-robin tournament held in Magnolia, Ark. The Muleriders won their first three games over Angelo State (7-0), Lindenwood (12-2), and Arkansas Tech (10-9), before dropping the finale to Arkansas-Monticello, 9-8.
Trey Buck and David Allday lead the Muleriders' offense as each has a .409 batting average. Allday also leads his club with nine RBI and is tied with three extra-base hits.
Gavin McCauley, one of four Southern Arkansas .400 hitters, has been successful on all seven of his stolen base attempts, and as a team, the Muleriders are 15-for-17 in this category.
Southern Arkansas' pitching staff is led by Doug Shields, who has yet to surrender an earned run or an extra-base hit through two starts and 8.0 innings of work. He's also struck out seven and walked one batter.
Opponents are hitting .268 and averaging close to 4.7 runs per game against the Muleriders this season.
