Box Score
ABILENE – The fourth-ranked Abilene Christian soccer team erased a 2-1 deficit with three second-half goals to beat Texas Woman's University 4-2 Friday afternoon at the Wildcat Soccer Pitch.
Sophomores Andrea Carpenter and Whitley Lindholm each scored twice as ACU improved to 8-0-1 (4-0-1 LSC) on the season and extended the program's current unbeaten streak to 14 matches.
“This win was good for our team because if they all come easy, sometimes you don't always know how to come back,” Carpenter said. “This result reminded us that we're capable of winning even if we're down one or two goals.”
The Pioneers remain winless on the season at 0-7-2 (0-5-1 LSC) despite giving the Wildcats fits throughout in the first half. TWU scored its first goal on Katy Black's corner kick that was headed in by Jillian Fuerman in the 25th minute, and then went ahead 14 minutes later on Candice Davies' unassisted score.
“That corner kick was a bang-bang cross and finish play, and the other goal was a result of a mental breakdown in the back,” head coach Casey Wilson said. “It felt like time stood still on their second goal, which was unfortunate, but these are all things we can learn from.”
The match started as if everything was going to go the Wildcats' way when Lindholm buried ACU's first shot attempt at the 1:51 mark from about 15-yards back. Carpenter started with the ball up the middle, but then passed it over to a wide-open Lindholm after crossing into the attack third.
The shots kept coming from all angles for the Wildcats, but nothing else got past Pioneer starting goalkeeper Beatrice Soto in the first half where she made five stops. In the second half, however, all of that would change as ACU released a flurry of shots in connecting on three of its 20 attempts.
Carpenter knotted the game at 2-2 in the 51st minute on an assist from Lexi Stirling. After receiving the ball just outside the 18, Carpenter cut back inside on a Pioneer defender to deliver a crisp shot on a clear look at the net. And less than 10 minutes later, she gave ACU the lead for good on a heads-up play, finishing a ball that Soto couldn't handle inside the goalmouth.
Carpenter's second goal was initiated by Jacey Ferrara's rifle shot above Soto's head. Soto got a mitt on the ball and slapped it over to her right side, but Carpenter was there to capitalize after it slipped away a second time.
“It was nerve racking at halftime but we quickly calmed down,” Carpenter said. “For myself, I was mad and I made it a point to put it all out there on the field.”
ACU capped its scoring run on Lindholm's second goal on an assist from Julie Coppedge in the 79th minute. Coppedge slotted the ball on a straight line inside the six, from where Lindholm slid forward to poke it past Soto.
“The girls were frustrated with the lack of finishing in the first half,” Wilson said. “We had a lot of point-blank shots that didn't go in. But this is a team that doesn't like to let things linger, and sure enough we got back on track … I was happy about our patience with the ball and we made most of our opportunities.”
ACU finished the match with a 34-6 advantage in shots as Texas Woman's was shutout in all areas of the second half, including shots and corner kicks. Wildcat goalkeeper Elliott London made two saves in the winning effort and improved her season record to 7-0. Soto finished with 11 saves in 81:40 in falling to 0-7-2. TWU's Leah Kull replaced Soto in goal for the final 8:20 but did not face a shot.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Texas A&M-Commerce. The Lions were the last team to defeat the Wildcats, beating them 1-0 on Oct. 29, 2010.
