PORTALES, N.M. – The No. 8 Abilene Christian women's soccer team continued its best start in program history following a 3-0 victory over Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico Friday afternoon.
The win lifted the Wildcats' season record to 6-0-1 and conference mark to 2-0-1, while the Zias slipped to 4-3-1 and 2-1-1.
ACU received all three goals in the second half with the last two going in less than three minutes apart in the 83rd and 86th minutes.
Megan Turner made it a 2-0 game with her first goal of the season after receiving an assist from Ashley Craig positioned on the right side. Ashley Holton then sealed the match for good a mere 2:44 later, booting in Madison Brown's throw-in from the top of the 18-yard box.
Andrea Carpenter struck first for the Wildcats at the start of the 49th minute with an assist from Jacey Ferrara. Carpenter's goal, which she one-timed in from the left side, was her fifth of the year.
ACU's defense limited the Zias to six shots with only one reaching senior goalkeeper Elliott London. For the Wildcats it was their fourth shutout of the season and second of the week following Sunday's 2-0 decision over Angelo State.
By comparison, ENM goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas was forced to make eight saves on 21 shots faced.
Krysta Grimm led the Wildcats with six shots. Holton and Julie Coppedge each fired five.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. match at West Texas A&M.
