ENMU Knocks Around Bullpen

ABILENE – A handful of blunders in the field and on the base paths allowed Eastern New Mexico to take game one Friday night, 10-5 to open a Lone Star Conference series in front of 300 plus fans at Crutcher Scott Field.

ACU falls to 19-15 on the season and 12-10 in conference play as the Wildcats still sit in seventh place. ENMU improved to 9-22 on the season and 6-16 in the LSC with the win.

Both teams were able to scratch two runs across the plate in the first inning as Will Calhoun and Marcus Drake each settled in to go five innings.

The Greyhounds would add a run in the fourth, but ACU would rally and tie the game at 3-3 again in the bottom of the fifth inning on a safety squeeze from Cameron Watten. Bryce Gerhardt scored on the squeeze after singling through the right side.

However, ACU would lose control in the sixth as an error led to three more Greyhound runs which proved to be enough for ENMU. The error was one of five on the night for the Wildcats that would strike again in the top of the seventh accounting for two more runs.

Calhoun would help his cause at the plate going 3-for-4 as did Gerhardt also recorded three hits for the Wildcats. Calhoun went 5 strong innings allowing three runs, only two of which were earned to go along with two strikeouts.

Again the ACU bullpen faltered as five different Wildcat pitchers allowed seven runs on six hits in relief.

Drake picked up the win for the Greyhounds as he was responsible for all five ACU runs, however only three were earned. Drake walked two and struck out one as he improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Wildcats and Greyhounds close out their LSC series on Saturday with a first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. from Crutcher Scott Field.
