ABILENE – The Abilene Christian women's and men's basketball teams will look to rebound from a pair of disappointing losses to Cameron when they play host to West Texas A&M for a Tuesday night doubleheader at Moody Coliseum.
Action begins with the women's game at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 7:30 p.m.
The ACU men's team begins the week with a 5-3 record (0-1 Lone Star Conference) after losing Saturday night's conference opener to the Aggies – a game in which the Wildcats led by 11 points early in the second half before faltering down the stretch. Kendall Durant scored a game-high 23 points, but only eight of those came after the break as Cameron held ACU to a 28.6 second-half shooting percentage.
The Wildcats also struggled from behind the arc in hitting just 5-of-19 3-point attempts.
ACU is shooting 46 percent from the field on the season, including 35 percent from the 3-point line, while averaging 32.2 rebounds per game. Zach Williams leads all Wildcat scorers with 13.1 points per game and Antonio Bell is first with 29 assists.
Dosh Simms pulled down 11 boards vs. Cameron and currently leads the Wildcats with a 6.6 per game average.
West Texas A&M's men's team (7-1, 2-0 LSC) comes in winners of five straight with their lone defeat a 53-50 decision to Texas A&M-International. The Buffs are averaging 63.6 points per game with 32.4 rebounds per contest while only allowing 56 points per game to opponents.
Kennon Washington is leading West Texas A&M by averaging 16 points per game followed by Donald Sims with 14.1 and a team best 9.3 rebounds per contest.
The ACU women's team dropped to 3-3 overall and 0-2 within the conference following their disheartening defeat to Cameron. Although the Wildcats rallied from a 31-16 halftime deficit with an incredible second-half run – led by Kelsey Smith's 22 points - they could not overcome a worrisome first half in which they missed four 3-pointers and 6-of-8 free throws.
After trailing by as many as 20 points early in the second half, ACU would cut Cameron's lead down to two points on three occasions only to see the Aggies respond with another basket or free throw. Cameron clinched the game with nine seconds remaining after Lacy Reinke raced to the rim to put back Sabelle Diata's missed free throw.
ACU sophomore Mack Lankford continues to lead her team in scoring with 19.2 points per game despite being shut out from the field on 10 attempts by the Aggies. Smith ranks second in scoring with 13.5 points and is first with 6.7 rebounds.
The Cameron game dropped ACU's shooting percentage to a tick above 40 percent at .401 and its 3-point success rate down to 28.4 percent. The Wildcats continue to do well at the free-throw line, from where they're shooting 75.3 percent.
The Lady Buffs (4-3, 3-0 LSC) have won four straight, including three conference games, after starting the year 0-3. West Texas A&M most recently defeated Texas Woman's on the road, 70-61, as the Lady Buffs shot 50 percent from the field and went 4-for-6 from beyond the three-point line.
Chontiquah White and Lacee Logan came off the bench to lead West Texas in scoring. White finished the game with a team-high 15 points and Logan scored 13 points, while going 3-for-3 from the three-point line.
Devin Griffin continues to lead the Lady Buffs in scoring with 15.9 points a game, while Ashley Leven leads the team in rebounds at 6.0 boards.
