ABILENE – Most of ACU's summer recruiting efforts were geared toward rebuilding a secondary depleted by graduation and defection, and going into the season-opener head coach Chris Thomsen is pleased with what he has in the defensive backfield.
Forced to replace "cornerstone player" Tony Harp, as well as Major Culbert, the coaching staff was forced to spend most of the summer scouring the country for defensive backs who could stand up to some of the best passing offenses in the country.
"So far we've been real pleased with the guys we were able to add," Thomsen said. "We've got Drew Cuffee and James Williams back at cornerback, and they've both had good summers. Richard Havins brings a lot of stability to the safety position."
Even with those three players returning, the Wildcats' depth in the secondary was almost non-existent when the summer began.
But with the transfer of Darien Williams (North Texas), Kamaron Riley, Nate Bailey and David Lamour, Thomsen is confident this group will be ale bto handle the challenges posed by the teams in the LSC.
"I've been pleased with the way the guys have picked up our schemes and how they've meshed with our returning players," Thomsen said. "Now they've just got to get in the fight and see how they perform."
