DENTON – A record breaking regular season came to an end in stellar fashion for the ACU soccer team Sunday afternoon as Andrea Carpenter recorded her second hat trick of the season for a 3-2 win over Texas Women's. ACU clinched second place in the Lone Star Conference with the win for a program high 14 wins.
With the win the Wildcats earned their highest seed in the LSC Post-season tournament finishing runner-up to Midwestern State. ACU will receive a first round bye with MSU in next week's tournament held in Wichita Falls. The Wildcats will face the winner of Angelo State and Incarnate Word as the tournament pairings will be announced later in the week.
Carpenter who has made her mark early on the ACU record books scored her second hat trick of the season giving her 18 goals a single-season record.
The freshman from Amarillo put the only points on the board in the first half with a header in front of the net from Lexi Stirling. ACU flooded the net with 10 first half shots, but could only manage one goal as Nori Morgan recorded four first half saves.
Christine Mendoza would tie the game at 1-1 just two minutes into the second half for her second goal of the season; however Carpenter would give the Wildcats the lead back just three minutes later on an unassisted goal in the 55th minute.
The back and forth match would continue as Kyli Morgan would knot the match at 2-2 just two minutes after Carpenter's second goal.
The Wildcats would add 13 second half shots as Carpenter took five. Her game winning and third goal of the match would come in the 75th minute on another unassisted goal pushing the Wildcats back on top 3-2.
Again the ACU defense would solid only allowing 11 shots for the Pioneers in the entire match. Junior goalkeeper Elliott London would pick up two saves in the win for ACU.
