TOPEKA, Kan. – Upset minded ACU volleyball saw two top 20 teams on their schedule Saturday and came away with a victory over No. 11 Emporia State, 3-1 before falling to No. 12 Truman State, 3-2. ACU finished 3-1 over the weekend at the Lady Blues Fall Classic improving their record to 13-3 on the season.
The Wildcats took a four set match from Emporia State 16-25, 25-20, 25-23, and 25-23. With the exception of the first set the Wildcats outplayed the Hornets with stellar defense recording 14 blocks as a team.
Senior Shawna Hines recorded nine blocks while Kelsie Edwards recorded 15 digs pacing the ACU defense. Hines also added 12 kills as she was one of two Wildcats in double figures.
Freshman Neely Borger sparked ACU in the final two sets as she recorded a season high 13 kills. Borger hit .722 coming up with seven of her 13 kills in the third and fourth sets.
In the afternoon finale ACU pushed No. 12 Truman State to five sets, but couldn't overcome a few costly errors down the stretch.
The Wildcats opened with a 25-18 but dropped the middle two sets 25-23, and 25-15 before rebounding in the fourth set 26-24. Truman would finish off the Wildcats in the fifth set 15-9 proving to be an exciting match between what should be two top 25 teams after national rankings come out on Monday.
ACU again proved to be tough defensively recording seven blocks as a team while Hines again led the way with six. Edwards was three digs shy of a season high with 18 while Jennie Hutt and IJ Moronu tallied double figure digs as well.
After the first set the Wildcats finished with a .371 hitting percentage, but recorded two negative percentages including the decisive fifth set. Today was also the first time ACU has been out hit by an opponent since a September 4th loss to Regis, which was also the Wildcats last loss.
Moronu recorded her 10th double-double of the season as she added 39 assists to her 11 digs.
The Wildcats will return to action Tuesday as they open a four game home stand beginning with a rare non-conference match with Angelo State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Moody Coliseum.
