STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Abilene Christian volleyball dropped a three-set affair to Tarleton State at Wisdom Gym on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats saw their four-match winning streak snapped while suffering their first loss in the month of October.
ACU looks to rebound as it continues its three-match road trip next week. It meets Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn. on Thursday before taking on conference frontrunner Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Ky. on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Hannah Gonzalez fueled the Wildcats with 10 kills, her seventh double-digit-kill performance in her last eight matches. She led the team with a .333 attack percentage alongside three blocks. Freshman Alyssa Todd followed with eight kills and a pair of blocks.
Rachel Koss dished out 28 assists, while Brennan Ramirez provided 10 digs. The duo has paced ACU in assists and digs, respectively, in each match this season. Ramirez notched a pair of service aces, while Abby Christian collected three points from the service line. She's the Wildcats' Division I career ace leader with 111.
The Texans set the tone in the opening frame, scoring the match's first five points. The Wildcats climbed back from an 11-point deficit with a seven-point rally that made it an 18-14 game. Tarleton State recaptured the momentum to hand ACU a 25-16 loss. Todd and Hadlee Welch each registered three kills and a block, while Gonzalez had two kills and two blocks. Ramirez collected both of her aces in the first set.
The Texans picked up an early lead in the second set and fended off the Wildcats throughout. ACU got within a couple points at 20-18, but Tarleton State scored five of the final six points for a 25-19 win. Gonzalez and Avery Thaler each registered four kills with no attack errors between them.
The Wildcats struck first in the third frame to capture a 9-5 advantage. The Texans responded to knot the score at 10 and take a 15-11 edge at the media timeout. They kept ACU at bay for the remainder of the set, clinching the match with a 25-19 win. Alexis Strong gave the Wildcats a spark with four kills, while Gonzalez added four of her own at .571. Koss distributed 13 assists.
