ABILENE -- The top two teams in the Lone Star Conference South Division played like it Saturday afternoon as Angelo State and ACU split a softball doubleheader at Wells Field.
The first-place Wildcats won the first game, 13-10, while the second-place Rambelles took the nightcap, 7-6. The Wildcats are now 20-18 overall and 7-2 in the LSC South, while the Rambelles are 34-8 and 9-3. ACU will be back in action next Saturday and Sunday with a three-game LSC South Division series at Tarleton State.
ACU was shut down Kari Galm in Friday night's series opener, but peppered her for 10 hits and six runs in just three innings in Saturday's opener. ACU trailed 4-0 and 6-3 before lighting up the scoreboard for 10 runs in the fourth inning.
Leisha Johnson led off the inning with a home run to make it 6-4, and Melissa Rodriguez had a scrifice fly off relief pitcher Jamie Thompson to make it a 6-5 contest. Then with two outs, Jackie Gentile singled to left field to drive in Jessica Shiery with the game-tying run. The Wildcats, however, were just getting started in the inning.
After a Kim Partin single loaded the bases, Nancy Sawyers -- who had a three-run home run in the second inning -- singled to right-center to drive in two runs and give ACU an 8-6 lead. With the bases loaded, Shelby McElvain struck, but reached base on a passed ball that also allowed Partin to score to make it 9-6. That gave Shiery a chance to hit with the bases loaded and the Wildcats' junior catcher delivered with a line drive grand slam home run that made it a 13-6 game.
Angelo State would add two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings before Jacque Gregoire shut the Rambelles down in the seventh for the win as she improved to 3-2. Freshman Kim White started on the mound for the Wildcats, but didn't record an out as she gave up four runs on four hits in the top of the first. Gregoire scattered eight hits over seven complete innings to grab the win.
In the second game, the Rambelles again jumped on ACU with four runs in the top of the first against starting pitcher Kim McDonald (10-11 with the loss). The Wildcats managed to post a single run in the third to make it a 4-1 game and then tied it in the fourth with a three-run home run by Sawyers. Each team added a run in the fifth to take a 5-5 tie into the sixth inning.
Brittany Welch gave the Rambelles the cushion they needed in the top of the sixth with a two-run single to make it a 7-5 game. ACU got a run in the sixth on a Rodriguez RBI single, but that was as close as the Wildcats could get.
