CANYON -- The ACU Wildcats are in fourth place after Monday's first round of the West Texas A&M Buffalo Stampede at the LaPaloma Golf Club.
The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes with 36 of those to be played on Monday, but high winds in the Panhandle forced the cancellation of Monday's second round, shortening the tournament to just 36 holes. The Wildcats will complete the tournament tuesday with 18 holes at the par-71, 6,805-yard course.
The Wildcats ? ranked No. 13 in the nation ? shot a 310 on Monday and are six shots off the pace set by West Texas A&M, which shot a 304. Western New Mexico is second with a first-round 305, followed by St. Mary's in third at 307, ACU in fourth, Southeastern Oklahoma State in fifth (315), East Central in sixth (331) and Panhandle State in seventh (331).
ACU's Hilton Funk, playing as an individual and not in the Wildcats' top five, is tied for fifth in the individual medalist race after shooting a first-round 74 on Monday. Colin Cruz of West Texas A&M is in first place in the individual standings at 2-under-par 69.
The Wildcats' team is led by three players ? Curtis Harris, Stephen Knight and Erik Manning ? all of whom fired rounds of 6-over-par 77 on Monday and are tied for ninth in the individual standings.
