ARLINGTON, Texas - Abilene Christian baseball's Baron Mannis continued his impressive freshman season with University Credit Union WAC Pitcher of the Week honors, the Western Athletic Conference announced Monday. The southpaw allowed no runs with a pair of saves across three outings last week.
It's the first weekly accolade of the season for the Wildcats, who picked up their second WAC series victory at Sacramento State. ACU plays its final midweek game versus UT Rio Grande Valley at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark. The Wildcats will celebrate The Forces Unite, presented by United Supermarkets.
Mannis logged six scoreless innings over three appearances last week. He was credited with the save in each of the Wildcats' victories over the Hornets and totaled six strikeouts while allowing just three hits. Opponents hit .150 against the Argyle, Texas product.
Mannis began his week with two scoreless frames in ACU's midweek matchup with Dallas Baptist, punching out three batters from one of the nation's top offenses. He closed out ACU's 7-2 win over Sacramento State on Friday with three innings in relief. Mannis faced just one batter over the minimum with three strikeouts. He showcased his efficiency with no walks and needed just 32 pitches.
Mannis was called upon in the 10th inning of Sunday's rubber game in Sacramento, Calif. He turned the Wildcats' 13-11 lead into a victory with a 1-2-3 frame that required just nine pitches.
In his first season on campus, Mannis has established himself as a reliable arm out of the bullpen. He is tied for the team lead with 18 appearances alongside fellow freshman Carson Wallace. Mannis is up to three saves and lowered his ERA to 4.62. Opposing batters are hitting just .205 against Mannis, who has 43 punchouts in 37.0 frames. His 1.43 WHIP ranks fourth on the team.
