ABILENE - Abilene Christian baseball's ninth-inning comeback bid fell just short in a 5-4 loss to Rice at Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark on Friday night. The Wildcats limited the Owls to just six hits in the opener of the three-game series.
ACU looks to even the series at 3 p.m. Saturday at Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark. Aidan Coleman is slated to start on the mound for the Wildcats.
Down to its final out and trailing 5-3, ACU took advantage of two hit batters and a walk to load the bases. Ryan Jones took a 1-0 offering off his right foot to plate Zandt Payne and move each runner station to station. The third hit batter of the inning induced a pitching change, and Rice needed just one pitch to force a groundout and strand the bases loaded.
On the heels of a nine-RBI performance in a midweek win over Stephen F. Austin, Diego Cardenas again paced the Wildcats' offense with a two-run double in the third inning that tied the game at 2. Brady Ladusau put ACU in front in the same frame with an RBI single that scored Cardenas.
Brett Lanman provided six solid innings, allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts. He was credited with a no-decision.
The Owls got on the board with a two-run homer that just stayed fair in the opening frame. The Wildcats answered with a three-piece in the third inning before both teams were held scoreless over the next three innings.
Rice picked up one run in each of the final three innings to tie the game and eventually take the lead. The last two runs were unearned.
