NORMAL, Ill. - Abilene Christian women's basketball looks to establish its deepest postseason run in the Division I era when it takes on Illinois State in the Postseason WNIT's Super 16 round. The action begins at CEFCU Arena at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
A win on Friday would advance ACU to the Great 8, where it would meet the winner between George Washington and Loyola Chicago. The Wildcats met the Redbirds one year ago to the day in last season's Super 16, then the team's longest run in four WNIT appearances, suffering a 78-68 loss at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.
ACU took down Florida International 77-66 in its second round matchup at Hardin-Simmons' Mabee Complex in Abilene on Tuesday. Leading by just three points, the Wildcats manufactured a fourth-quarter rally, outscoring the Panthers 21-13 in the final 10 minutes.
Jazmyn Stone turned in her best game at ACU with a season-high 13 points and a career-best seven assists to just one turnover. Four Wildcats scored in the double figures, led by Erin Woodson's 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Natalia Chavez rattled off 17 points in a season-high 38 minutes, and Payton Hull proved versatile with 16 points, four assists and three steals.
ACU knocked down 12 of 27 attempts from beyond the arc for its second-most three-pointers and second-highest three-point percentage of the season. The Wildcats connected on over half their shots at a 29-of-57 clip, their second-highest percentage of the year versus a Division I opponent at .509. On the defensive end, ACU forced 23 turnovers to just 10 of its own, its third-fewest of the season.
The Wildcats are going for their 25th win of the season, their second-most as a Division I program and most since 2015-16. It would be ACU's 19th road victory over the past two seasons, its most in a two-year period since 2018-20.
Juniors Hull and Emma Troxell find themselves on the brink of career milestones. Hull is 14 points away from becoming the third Wildcat in the Division I era to score 1,500 points. She ranks third with 1,476 career points, second with 182 steals and eighth with 228 assists. Hull ranks third with 513 field goals, fourth with 212 three-pointers and sixth with 248 free throws.
