
ACU Completes Season Sweep of Utah Tech Behind Woodson’s Double-Double

ABILENE - Erin Woodson brought down a career-high 14 rebounds to spearhead Abilene Christian women's basketball's 76-66 win over Utah Tech at Moody Coliseum on Thursday night. Woodson dropped 23 points for her second career double-double.
With a season sweep of the Trailblazers complete, the Wildcats aim for a series win over Utah Valley when they host the Wolverines at Moody Coliseum at 1 p.m. Saturday. ACU will celebrate She Can Be and Mentor Day, presented by Dr. Leslie Hutchins.
The Wildcats improved to 20-8 on the season, marking their second consecutive year with at least 20 wins after going 22-13 last season. It's the first time they've done so since the 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns. ACU also picked up its 11th conference victory, its most since 2019-20.
The Wildcats sported a 13-of-35 mark from beyond the arc, good for their most three-pointers of the season as they earned their sixth win in a row over the Trailblazers. ACU registered 19 assists on 22 made field goals and turned Utah Tech's 19 turnovers into 25 points. The Wildcats led wire to wire.
Woodson recorded her second-most career points at a 6-of-13 clip, including a trio of three-pointers while playing the entire 40 minutes. She matched her career best with eight free throws and tied her career high with six assists. Woodson added two steals and turned the ball over just once. She drew eight fouls.
Six of Woodson's rebounds came on the offensive glass, where ACU outdid Utah Tech in second-chance points, 15-2. Woodson has scored in the double figures in all but three games this season, including just one conference game.
Payton Hull stayed hot with a do-it-all performance. She tallied 16 points and seven rebounds to go with six assists, four steals and a block. Natalia Chavez scored 13 points with three makes from long distance and six boards. Emma Troxell was the fourth Wildcat in double figures, notching 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Breanna Davis added eight points with her third block of the season. Freshman Riley Grohman swished a pair of three-pointers for her highest-scoring conference game.
ACU was fueled by a pair of 13-plus-point rallies. The Wildcats began the game on a 14-0 tear over the opening 3:18. It set the tone for a well-rounded effort by ACU, who had four student-athletes notch five points in the first quarter en route to a 22-11 lead. It scored nine points off of seven Trailblazer turnovers. Hull and Woodson each had three assists, with Hull coming away with three steals as well. The Wildcats took a 41-32 edge into the break with nine second-quarter points from Woodson.
ACU fended off a pair of second-half rallies by Utah Tech after leading by as much as 17 with 3:30 to go in the third quarter. A Chavez three-pointer gave the Wildcats their biggest lead of the game, but three consecutive shots from beyond the arc by the Trailblazers made it a single-digit game. Utah Tech ended the period on a 14-3 run to cut ACU's advantage to 57-51 entering the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats restored their lead to 10 points in the fourth quarter, but another rally by the Trailblazers got them within four points at 63-59 with 6:23 to play. A layup and a free throw made it a 70-64 ballgame with 3:25 remaining, but it was as close as Utah Tech got.
