Hull Scores 27 to Power Wildcats Past Texans, 68-65

ABILENE - Payton Hull poured in 27 points to power Abilene Christian women's basketball past Tarleton State in a 68-65 win at Moody Coliseum on Tuesday night. The Wildcats came out on top in a back-and-forth contest that featured seven ties and nine lead changes.
ACU began its busy week on the right foot before meeting Utah Valley and California Baptist in the next four days at Moody Coliseum. The Wildcats take on the Wolverines at 6 p.m. Thursday for Worship on the Court night ahead of a matchup with the Lancers at 1 p.m. Saturday.
After both squads battled to a 35-35 tie at halftime, ACU's offense came to life in the third quarter, outscoring Tarleton State 22-14. The Texans tipped the scales in their favor in the final period, scoring the first nine points to grab a 58-57 lead with 7:29 to go.
Emma Troxell's jumper pushed the Wildcats back in front for the remainder of the game, with ACU's lead falling to three points or less for the final 1:42. Hull scored eight points in a row in the fourth quarter to strengthen the Wildcats' edge to as much as seven.
ACU improved to 11-0 at home this season with its 16th consecutive victory at Moody Coliseum. It continued its best start to conference play since 2019-20 at 7-2.
Hull dropped her most points in a Western Athletic Conference matchup since her freshman campaign in 2023-24. She connected on nine of 17 shots, including a 4-of-10 mark from beyond the arc. Hull matched her season high with her most three-pointers in WAC play this year. She is the conference's leading scorer with 17.4 points per game.
Hull added five rebounds, a team-high four assists and three steals. Erin Woodson followed with 10 points at a 4-of-8 clip alongside five boards and three takeaways. She is hitting 44.9% of her shots in WAC play, ranking second in the conference.
Breanna Davis and Emma Troxell tallied eight points apiece, with Davis registering her most points in a WAC game this season. Troxell brought down five rebounds, while Natalia Chavez dished out three assists.
Both teams scored with efficiency in the first quarter as the Wildcats closed with a 21-17 lead. ACU knocked down seven of 13 field goal attempts, including two of four three-point tries and five of six free throws. It forced nine turnovers, with Woodson coming away with three steals and five points. Hull led the scoring with seven points.
The Texans leveled the score at 35 at the break after holding the Wildcats to 14 points. Tarleton State moved in front by as much as nine following a 15-0 rally, but ACU answered with a 12-3 run to end the half on a high note. In the final minute, freshman Riley Grohman knocked down a three-pointer before nabbing a steal on the in-bound, which turned into a game-tying layup by Hull.
