CEDAR CITY, Utah — ACU senior Bradyn Hubbard's team-high 14 points pushed him past the 2,000-point mark for his college career, but the Wildcats went ice cold from the field in a 74-52 loss at Southern Utah on Saturday night.
The loss drops ACU to 10-9 overall and 2-4 in the WAC. One third of the way through conference, play, ACU is tied for fifth place with Tarleton State and Southern Utah.
Coming into Saturday, Hubbard needed just eight points to reach 2,000 for his career. He reached the milestone on ACU's first shot of the second half with a jumper just outside the paint. That sparked a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 44-34, but the Thunderbirds pushed the Cats away and maintained a healthy lead for the remainder of the game.
Hubbard scored 1,390 points in his two junior college seasons at Connors State (Okla.) before transferring to ACU for his last two years. He now has 616 points with the Wildcats.
ACU shot a season-low 24% on field goals, but was 19-of-25 (78%) at the free throw line.
ACU had won three consecutive meetings over Southern Utah before Saturday.
