LAS CRUCES – Abilene Christian fell to New Mexico State in a narrow 1-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon at NMSU's Soccer Complex. The Wildcats are now even on the season, with their first win on August 14 against UTEP.
In the first half, there was an early offensive effort from the Wildcats, with Amelia Leggett attempting a shot in the sixth minute. The Aggies capitalized on their opportunities, scoring the only goal of the half in the 16th minute. Despite ACU's eight shots, three of which were on goal, in the first half, the Wildcats were still behind the Aggies 1-0.
The second half opened with both sides battling to gain momentum, but the Wildcats were slowed by a series of offside calls, including two in the 61st minute alone. The physicality of the match intensified, resulting in multiple fouls and yellow cards for each team. Despite the pressure, neither side was able to break through, and New Mexico State held on to its early advantage. ACU finished with a 10–6 edge in shots and forced the Aggies into nine fouls compared to just five committed by the Wildcats.
Smith led the Wildcats with two shots on goal from her two attempts. Leggett was active offensively, taking three shots, with two on target. Peyton Hill contributed with a single shot that was on goal. Goalkeepers Bella Medrano and Lili Ross each recorded one save, with Medrano playing a scoreless half and Ross allowing one goal in her 45 minutes on the field.
"We showed tremendous growth in possession and movement, which was exciting to watch," head coach Stephen Salas said. "With the amount of opportunities and pressure we created, keeps us focused on the growth we've shown."
Looking ahead, the Wildcats will return to Elmer Gray Stadium for their home opener against Tulsa on August 21 at 7 p.m. CT. Ahead of kickoff, a special freshman tailgate will welcome new students to campus life and invite them to experience their first home game decked out in purple and white.
"I'm excited to watch this team respond as we kick off our first week at home with students back on campus," said Salas. "This team is fun to watch and to get behind. I'm looking forward to this season more than ever with this group."
