STEPHENVILLE - The ACU women's soccer team twice had victory in their grasp, but the luck of ball's bounce was not on their side as Tarleton State scored twice in the final nine minutes to force a 2-2 draw Friday night.
ACU's record moves to 5-7-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the WAC after the first half of conference play.
"A hard-fought performance from the team tonight on the road to Tarleton to earn a draw. Good to get any points on the road but we know there was more out there for us. Many positives and growth from the night to score two nice build up goals, start the game off strong going 1-0 into the half, and to keep fighting for the game winning goal even when our opponents equalized," ACU head coach Stephen Salas said.
Hannah Martin's first goal in her three seasons as a Wildcat came midway through the first half. ACU's 1-0 lead held for 61 minutes until the frenetic final nine minutes.
The Texans drew up the equalizer on a bending free kick from just outside the box by Jacie Bass at the 81:26 mark.
Two minutes later ACU's Peyton Hill popped the ball ahead of the defense to Amelia Leggett who was streaking down the middle of hte field. Tarleton State's keeper moved forward to contest, and Leggett dribbled swiftly around her to the right and drilled the ball into the net. It was Leggett's third goal of the season and her second in the last two games. She also scored in Sunday's 4-0 shellacking of Southern Utah.
However, in the 85th minute the Texans responded. A high one-timer arced near the goal which brought keeper Bella Medrano off her feet to push the ball away. The ball hit lightly tapped the top of the goalpost, and gently fell down to Tarleton's Gabrielle Williams who smashed it with her right foot for the game-tying goal.
"Our seniors continue to step up big as both goals were setup or scored by them. The first goal Peyton and Emma Nylund were pressing the box before Hannah Martin stepped up with a beauty of a left footed strike from distance. Our go ahead goal was another nice build up between McCarly and Peyton to Amelia Leggett, who dribbled the goalkeeper to finish," said Salas.
"Undefeated in our last three but we know there's still more growth heading into the second half of conference. I'm excited to watch this team continue to rise up!"
The Wildcats next hit the road for a two-game swing in Utah -- Thursday, Oct. 16 at Southern Utah, and Sunday, Oct. 19 at Utah Tech -- before playing the final three games of the regular season at Elmer Gray Stadium.
