Cone Signs Undrafted Free Agent Deal With Chicago Cubs

ABILENE - Abilene Christian right-handed pitcher Henry Cone signed with the Chicago Cubs as an undrafted free agent on Tuesday night.

Cone is this year's second Wildcat to begin their professional journey in the Windy City after RHP Dominick Reid was selected by the Cubs with the 90th pick in the third round of the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday. The pair is set to mark eight ACU players, all pitchers, that have signed with a Major League franchise in the past three seasons.

Cone competed for one season in Abilene after previous stops at Elon, McLennan Community College and Baylor. He amassed a 1-4 record and a 7.04 ERA over 15 outings and 15 ⅓ innings as a valuable arm out of the Wildcats' bullpen.

The Brenham, Texas product struck out 15 batters and collected four saves, each in Western Athletic Conference play, with a 1.43 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .224 batting average.

In his first outing of the year, Cone pitched an immaculate inning against Prairie View A&M, striking out the side on the minimum nine pitches. He didn't allow a run in his first four performances of the year and five of his first six.

Cone earned the save in ACU's regular season finale at California Baptist, preserving a 7-6 ballgame that saw the Wildcats clinch a share of the WAC title. ACU built a 34-23 record, its most wins since 2021, and made a run to the championship game of the WAC Tournament.

Off the field, Cone received Academic All-WAC distinction.
