ARLINGTON, Texas - Abilene Christian women's basketball's
Meredith Mayes was named the Jersey Mike's A Sub Above Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career, the conference announced Monday. Mayes powered the Wildcats to a pair of victories versus McMurry and East Texas A&M last week.
The junior center registered a double-double in both contests and has three on the season. She tallied 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting to go with 13 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass, in a
112-60 win over the War Hawks on Dec. 2. It's Mayes' second 20-point effort of the year and the most points scored in a game by ACU in the Division I era.
Mayes followed it up with a 19-point, 13-rebound performance in a
72-55 victory versus the Lions in Commerce, Texas on Dec. 6. She sank seven of 10 shots and added four offensive boards, three assists and a career-high six steals. Mayes committed zero turnovers across both games and shot at a .762 clip.
The Wildcats improved to 6-3 with both wins and rose into a tie for second in the WAC standings. Mayes continued her reign as the conference's leader in field goal percentage at .709, over 20% higher than the student-athlete in second place. She is third in the WAC in scoring with 15.7 points per game and ranks sixth with 8.4 rebounds per contest.
The Bixby, Okla. native is the WAC's leading offensive rebounder with 3.6 per game. Her free throw percentage ranks fourth in the conference at .763, and she's tied with
Payton Hull in eighth with 2.1 steals per game.
Mayes ranks sixth in ACU's DI history with 183 offensive boards and is two away from matching Breanna Wright in fifth. Her 55 blocks are also good for sixth.
Mayes and ACU aim for their third win in a row when they take on Texas Tech at the Odessa College Sports Center in Odessa, Texas at 2 p.m. Sunday. A victory would mark the Wildcats' first win over a power conference opponent since 2017.
