Erin Woodson and
Meredith Mayes each recorded double-doubles to lead Abilene Christian women's basketball to a 72-55 win over East Texas A&M at the Field House on Saturday afternoon. Woodson registered the first double-double of her career, while Mayes notched her third of the season.
The Wildcats aim for their first victory over a power conference opponent in over eight years when they take on Texas Tech at the Odessa College Sports Center in Odessa, Texas on Sunday, Dec. 14. ACU last beat Oklahoma State in the WNIT on March 16, 2017.
ACU limited East Texas A&M to a .360 field goal percentage, its fifth game of the season holding an opponent under .400. The Wildcats forced 22 turnovers behind 15 steals, six of which came from Mayes for a career high. She tallied 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting with 13 rebounds while committing no turnovers.
The Wildcats turned the Lions' turnovers into 25 points. They trailed for only 20 seconds of game time and didn't trail after the 6:32 mark of the first quarter.
Woodson added 11 points and four assists with a career-best 10 boards. She matched her career high of two blocks and never turned the ball over.
Payton Hull scored 16 points at a 4-of-8 clip, while
Emma Troxell tied her career best of four steals.
ACU held East Texas A&M to a 2-of-8 mark from the field in the first quarter, forcing eight turnovers. Mayes tallied seven points and five rebounds as the Wildcats grabbed a 20-11 lead through 10 minutes.
The Wildcats took a 38-27 lead into halftime after Mayes contributed another seven points in the second quarter. She hit five of seven shots in the first half. Mayes combined with Woodson and
Molly Daugherty for 10 of ACU's 13 rebounds. The Wildcats led by as much as 16 in the quarter following a 9-0 rally.
Troxell collected each of her seven points in the third quarter to make up half of ACU's scoring. The Lions got within four points following a 10-0 scoring run, but Troxell nailed a three-pointer to put the Wildcats up by seven at the end of the period. East Texas A&M outscored them in the quarter, 18-14, as Mayes came away with three steals.
ACU had its top defensive showing in the fourth quarter in outscoring East Texas A&M, 20-10. The Wildcats connected on seven of 12 field goal tries, with Hull responsible for half of her team's scoring with 10 points and three assists in the period. Troxell and Mayes combined for five steals.
