Tournaments for Tennis Singles & Doubles and Women's Soccer are Coming to Abilene
ABILENE - ACU has been chosen as the host site for WAC championship tournaments in tennis and women's soccer this fall.
The John T.L. Jones Tennis Center will host the inaugural WAC Fall Invitational for men's and women's tennis on Oct. 25-27.
"We are extremely excited and grateful that we have the opportunity to host the first WAC Fall Invitational," head women's tennis coach Bryan Rainwater said. "It's a great opportunity for us to showcase our campus and facilities, as well as seeing the top talent from each team in the WAC. We are really looking forward to hosting a great tournament!"
Each program's coach will select two singles players and one doubles team per gender to play in the championships. ACU will have a total of four women and four men taking part in the tournament.
The participants will then be seeded for the brackets based on their World Tennis Number and ITA ranking.
The draw will feature eight singles players and four doubles teams for the men, and 12 singles players and six doubles teams for the women.
The champions from each draw will advance to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Waco on Nov. 19-24. The new NCAA tournament is a two-year pilot program and does not affect the team championships played in May.
One week after the WAC's championship tennis matches at ACU, the first matches of the WAC Women's Soccer Tournament will begin at Elmer Gray Stadium.
The top six teams will take part in the tournament with the no. 1 and no. 2 seeds receiving byes into the semifinal round.
Two quarterfinal matches will be played on Sunday, Nov. 3. The winners will then advance to the two semifinal matches on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
The soccer championship match is set for Saturday, Nov. 9.
"I'm incredibly excited to host two WAC championships on our campus this fall," said Vice President for Athletics Zack Lassiter. "It's a tremendous opportunity for us to show off our wonderful campus, athletic facilities and the Abilene community."
The Wildcats also hosted the WAC Women's Soccer Tournament in 2021, which was ACU's first year in the conference.
