ARLINGTON – One out. Bottom of the tenth. Tie game. Winning run at second base. Globe Life Field, a place that two-and-a-half years earlier hosted the World Series. A freshman at the plate against the defending national runner-ups. Enter a moment
Maddox Miesse will never forget. The youngster delivered with a walk-off single to beat the Oklahoma Sooners, 4-3 in 10 innings, Wednesday night at the home of the Texas Rangers. The ACU baseball team never trailed, led 3-0, and even after Oklahoma (2-3) tied it up with two in the eighth and one in the ninth, the Wildcats came through. ACU moves to 4-1 to start a season for the third time in the last four years under fifth-year head coach
Rick McCarty. It's a night ACU fans won't soon forget.
How It Happened
- Right-hander
Blake Anderson got off to a good start for ACU, pitching a scoreless first three innings. His offense gave him a lead in the bottom of the second inning as well.
- After a one-out
Miller Ladusau double,
Jake Skaggs delivered an rbi-single to give ACU a 1-0 edge. Anderson, with the 1-0 lead, gave way to
Drake Boggan, who was excellent out of the bullpen, tossing four scoreless.
- Miesse got his remarkable night started with a bases-loaded walk in the home fourth, and it was a 2-0 lead. He would make it 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single into right center field to score
Tanner Tweedt. The freshman drove in two of the first three runs for the 'Cats Wednesday, but the biggest was saved for last.
- Oklahoma bounced back in the top of the eighth off
Adam Byrd and
Max Huffling. The Sooners walked with the bases loaded to get on the scoreboard, then drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly. It was 3-2 headed to the ninth.
- OU tied it up in the top of the ninth with a single through the right side, and it sent the 3-3 game to extra innings.
-
Garrett Williams led the home tenth off with a walk, then Skaggs moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt, and then Miesse delivered the fireworks to win it.
Stat Pack
- Miesse, Skaggs, and Ladusau all led the way with two hits apiece, and Miesse led ACU with three runs driven in.
- Miesse reached base four times with two hits and a pair of walks, and the three runs driven in is a season-high.
- Anderson made his first career start, going three scoreless on two hits with five strikeouts.
- Boggan tossed four scoreless on two hits and recorded a pair of strikeouts himself.
- Huffling gets the win after throwing the final 2.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
