Wildcats split first-ever WAC doubleheader as focus turns to finale

EDINBURG, Texas – The ACU baseball team won its' first-ever Western Athletic Conference game on Saturday, defeating UTRGV 3-1 in the opener of a twin bill before dropping the nightcap by a tally of 6-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- ACU started the scoring with a pair of runs in the home fourth before Bryson Hill opened the fifth inning with a solo shot to right to make it a 3-0 Wildcat lead.
- A two-out, bases empty home run in the eighth provided the Vaqueros with their entire offense for Game 1, and Tanner Riley picked up his first save of the season an inning later.
- In the nightcap, the Wildcat offense never got going, while UTRGV did all the damage in the second and eighth innings.
STAT PACK:
- Tommy Cruz picked up two base hits in Saturday's opener, while Hill and Miller Ladasau were each credited with an RBI.
- Starter Tyler Morgan pitched into the fifth and struck out five batters before giving way to Max Huffling, who responded with 3.2 innings, seven strikeouts and his third win of the young season.
- Breck Eichelberger was hit the loss after surrendering two earned runs over 6.1 innings of work.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Riley became the third Wildcat reliever to pick up a save this spring, joining Adam Byrd and Carter Sells.
- The Purple and White are now hitting an even .300 as a team for the year, while Mitchell Dickson extended his hitting streak to seven games.
- Six ACU pitchers threw on Saturday, and the team's earned run average in conference play sits at 2.65 after two games.

- The Wildcats and Vaqueros are set to wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m. from Edinburg.
