Wildcats pick up another win in home opener

ABILENE, Texas – The ACU women's tennis team picked up its' second straight victory on Thursday, defeating 15th-ranked Angelo State 6-1 at Eager Tennis Pavilion. Three of the six singles flights went to three sets before the Purple and White prevailed, and the Wildcats have now outscored opponents 10-4 in their last two matches.

QUOTABLE: 
  • "I'm really proud of the effort we gave today against a solid team. We knew they were well-coached and were going to give us everything they had, and I feel like we were able to answer," assistant coach Bryan Rainwater said. "We had somewhat of a slow start, but as the match progressed we had great energy and fought for every point. The atmosphere by the end of the match was great, and I really felt like the girls played as a team and fought for each other today."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The doubles tandem of Allison Stewart and Sylvia Viljoen took the second flight 6-1, and Andrea Guerrero and Maryjoe Crisologo followed with a 6-3 victory to give the Wildcats the first point of the afternoon.
  • Guerrero picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win in #4 singles, and Stewart came away with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory on Court 2 to put the Purple and White on the brink of the clinch. 
  • Viljoen's 6-0, 6-1 victory in the third flight clinched the day for Abilene Christian. 
  • Claire Fisher (sixth flight) and Ileana Mocciola (fifth flight) each picked up a three-set win to round out the day, giving the 'Cats their most convincing victory of the season. 
 
UP NEXT: 
  • The Wildcats continue the homestand on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. match against Dallas Baptist. ACU will also host Tyler Junior College on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Eager Tennis Pavilion.
