ABILENE – Abilene Christian men's tennis will play its biggest home match of the year Friday when it plays host to longtime rival Incarnate Word, the winner of which will be declared Southland Conference Regular-Season Champions.
First serve at the Eager Tennis Center is set for 11:44 a.m. Free hot dogs and Dr. Pepper will be provided. Several additional prizes will be given away to fans in attendance in between singles and doubles, including ACU athletics gear and gift certificates to Buffalo Wild Wings and Taco Bell.
The Wildcats previously won a share of the Southland crown in 2017, and enter this week's dual atop the standings at 4-0 (18-4 overall), while the Cardinals are right behind them at 2-1 (10-5 overall) with another league match left to play Monday at Lamar.
ACU defeated both the Cardinals and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at home last weekend by the same 5-2 score, and the weekend previous the Wildcats swept Nicholls 7-0 and defeated fifth-place New Orleans, 5-2.
The Cardinals, which blanked ACU last season in San Antonio, 7-0, started their conference slate with a 7-0 home win over the Colonels and 4-3 road triumph at UNO, but lost a 4-3 match earlier this week at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders currently are tied with Lamar for third place at 1-1 in the six-team division, which sends its best four teams to the Southland Conference Championship the last weekend of April (26-28).
Wildcat tennis players have earned eight Southland Conference Player of the Week citations this spring. Senior Josh Sheehy has earned half of those as he is off to a 14-4 start at No. 1 singles. Playing down the lineup from Sheehy is his younger brother Jonathan, junior Nikolas Moceanu, freshman Dimitris Azoides, and newcomers Riley Tran and Akinori Wada.
ACU's 10 singles players have combined for an 85-43 record (.664) while its 14 doubles pairings are 34-20 (.630).
