Wildcats dominate doubles draw at Midland Racquet Club

ABILENE – Brothers Josh and Jonathan Sheehy were back in the doubles championship for the second consecutive year at the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational earlier this week, but as part of different Wildcat teams.
Josh – a senior – was paired with junior Niko Moceanu, while Jonathan – a junior – teamed with redshirt junior Sebastian Langdon, and together they dominated each half of the doubles bracket to reach Sunday's final.
Josh's and Niko's championship run as the tournament's No. 2 seeds started with a 9-8 decision over New Mexico's Stepan Holis and Karlo Divkovic. They followed with consecutive 9-7 triumphs over the UTSA tandem of Juri Recko and Javier Gonzalez, and the mixed duo of Luke Simkess (Tyler JC) and Max Kurzban (TCU).
They then edged their teammates in the finals, 8-6.
Sebastian and Jonathan also were engaged in three close matches leading into the championship. They first topped the UTSA team of Kai Breitbach and Joao Ceolih, 9-8, and then doubled up UTA's Jakub Grzegorzyk and Enrique Pardo, 8-4, in the quarterfinals before dispatching top-seeded Marcus Walters and Alexander Parker of Tyler Junior College, 8-5, in the semifinals.
The Sheehy brothers additionally faired well in singles.
Josh entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and made it all the way to the semifinals of the 32-man draw, where he fell to New Mexico's Dominic West, 6-3, 6-4. Earlier in the draw, however, he rolled through his first three opponents: Javier Gonzalez (UTSA), Jose Carvajal (Utah State) and Gardiner Perotti (SMU) by respective scores of 6-2, 6-2; 6-4, 6-4; and 6-2, 6-2.
Josh was the lone Wildcat to make it out of the first round of the main draw, but it was Jonathan who ended up winning the most singles matches as he flourished throughout the back draw.
After being ousted by New Mexico's Karlo Divkovic in their first main draw match, 7-5, 6-3, Jonathan rebounded with four consecutive victories. He first defeated two opponents from UT Arlington and then topped Texas A&M's Kevin Lam in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-3, before dropping New Mexico's Holis, 6-0, 0-6, 10-7.
The other half of ACU's men's team was sent to New Mexico State for the annual Aggie Invitational. There, the Wildcats had Cole Lawson and Jackson Fine place fourth in doubles after falling in the third-place match to New Mexico State's Simicek / Flores, 6-4, while in singles, freshman Riley Tran won three of five matches to place 10th of 32 individuals. Tran's wins were against Erik Dallman of Mesa, 6-0, 6-0, Jared Horwood of Arizona, 6-3, 6-0, and David Valles of Western New Mexico, 5-7, 6-1, 10-5.
Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to San Antonio for the UTSA Invitational, Oct. 12-16; however, some individuals and doubles teams may be selected for the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa (Sept. 29-Oct. 8).
